How to Make Your Own VoIP System

VoIP, or Voice over Internet Protocol, is the type of technology that allows you to place phone calls via the Internet using standard landline phones. VoIP uses adapters to convert your analog voice signal into digital ones and vice versa. A VoIP phone system consists of a VoIP adapter, telephone sets, phone cables, jacks, and a high-speed Internet line. VoIP technology is widely accepted due to its cost saving features like toll-free long distance calls and cheap international rates. Learn to set up your own VoIP system and save some cash

Instructions

1   Mount an RJ-14 telephone jack on the wall near your Internet modem or network router, using screws or mounting tape supplied with the jack. Mount another RJ-14 jack on the wall close to where you wish to place a phone set. Unscrew the cover of both jacks and loosen the red and green terminal screws inside, using a screwdriver.

2   Run a telephone cable from the jack near the adapter to the jack where you will put a phone, but allow a foot of extra cable at both ends of the line. Fasten the cable using cable staples every 12 inches, but do not damage or puncture any part of the cable.

3   Strip off three inches from the cover of the cable at both ends, using diagonal pliers. Strip off 1/2 inch from the insulation at the tip of the red and green inner wires, using a wire stripper.

4   Hook the red wire clockwise around the red terminal screw on the jack, and hook the green wire clockwise around the green terminal screw. Tighten both screws to secure the connection, and replace the jack cover using a screwdriver.

5   Plug a landline phone into the jack, turn on your adapter, and lift the handset to listen for a dial tone. Place a call to someone to check the line.
